What to Say in an Interview? A Practical Guide

The hiring manager should understand that you have a perfect set of skills for this position, excellent personal and professional qualities, as well as the incredible potential that will help the company reach success. However, at the time you prepare the powerful answers to all these questions, you should learn more about what to say in an interview since some phrases can become the red flag to your potential employer. Only one or two wrong sentences, and the hiring manager will not care how successful you were in the previous position. What to Say in a Job Interview?

“So, Tell Me What This Company Is Doing?”

Coming to interview unprepared is the common mistake of many people. Any working interview is a complex and challenging process that requires adequate preparation. It means that you should learn everything about the company you apply to. First, it will help understand if you really can become a valuable asset in this environment. Second, it will help you show your excitement during the interview. The interviewing manager wants you to show the desire and motivation. Thus, start your preparation by researching about the company. Also, it would be great if you could talk to a current or past employee of this company and learn the vitally important information about it.

“My Last Company Was Very Bad. I Hope Yours Will Be Better…”

No matter how bad your company was or how unfair they treated you. In the interview with the potential employer, you should not blame the previous company. To reach success on this interview, keep your tone somewhere between neutral and positive emphasizing on the knowledge, skills, and competencies you acquired on the previous position, as well as what you are going to attain in the future. 

“My Boss Was a Very Tough Person.”

If you could not come to a mutual understanding with your boss, you should not mention that in this interview. As we as you cannot complain about the previous workplace, you should not tell the negative things about your boss. We assure you that listening about the difficult relationships with your boss, your potential employer will think that you are a hard person to deal with. 

“I Am So Nervous.”

Undoubtedly, every person is nervous during interview. However, it is not necessary to inform the hiring manager about that since he/she does not want to employ the person, who lacks confidence. 

“I Can Do Everything.”

We assure you that the employer is searching for the person, who could perform his or her duties perfectly and cope with own role rather effortlessly. So, saying “I don`t care what position you offer because I can do everything” you significantly reduce your chances to get this job because the hiring manager will think “This person will do everything equally bad.” Instead, you may research about the position offered and get ready to explain what knowledge and skills will help you feel at this position as a fish in water.

“I Know that I Do Not Have Enough Experience, But...”

Perhaps, it is the most common mistake committed by all interviewees, especially for the young people, who recently graduated or changed a career. The problem is that by apologizing for not having the right knowledge, skills, or experience you clearly explain to your potential employer that you are definitely not a perfect fit for this position. Instead of focusing on your weaknesses, stay positive and make the emphasis on your strengths. Are you a good problem-solver? Tell about it. Who knows, maybe their previous employer was fired because he/she lacked this skill. 

“I Have a Great Answer for That.”

Should you neither demonstrate your shyness and lack of confidence, nor show that you have spent many sleepless nights trying to memorize the answers to potential questions. If you believe that you can reach success because you show that you are hyper-prepared, you are not right. The hiring manager wants to see a determined and goal-oriented person ready to work hard to reach the company`s goals and grow with the company. As such, when preparing answers to interview questions do not try to memorize them. Certainly, you have to be prepared for the interview but do not try to talk with the common phrases since it will reduce your chances to get this job.

“Perfection Is My Weakness.”

Do not even try to persuade your employer using these terrible clichés. We assure you that you will not surprise the hiring manager saying such a banal thing but reveal a weak side of your personality. Indeed, the employer wants to hire a sincere and passionate individual, who wants to work hard and become a valuable asset in this company. As such, instead of telling that you can think outside of the box, you should better focus on your actual achievements. 

“I Remember How I Was Excited Visiting Barcelona…”

Undoubtedly, the stories are much more interesting than just the dry facts, but they are totally inappropriate at the interview. If the hiring manager is asking you to tell such a story, you need to relate it to the experience, skills, and knowledge you got from this story that will be particularly useful at your new workplace.

“I Am Good at Creating PTS Reports.”

Do not use jargons or various abbreviations. Otherwise, you have to explain them. Your answers will be more clear and coherent without using the words, which are unknown to your hiring manager.

“Emm, I Don`t Know.”

Even if you do not have an answer to this question, the answer “I don`t know” is not an option. It is a red flag to your employer serving as a proof that you cannot be creative in a critical situation. If the manager is asking the question and you do not have an answer to it, just say: “It is a good question. Give me a few seconds to think about it, please.” Still cannot answer? Ask to give you a glass of water and try to use this time to formulate a good answer.

“How Many Days of Vacation Can I Have?”

If you do not know what to say in an interview, we can assure you that talking about vacation is very wrong. We understand that you want to discuss this point as soon as possible. However, all WIFM questions (What Is for Me?) sound too arrogant. First and foremost, your potential employer wants to know what you can give to their company. What can you do for the optimization of the business processes, making more money, and the overall growth of the organization? Remember that making you happy will become their priority when they decide to hire you.

“No, I Do Not Have Any Questions.”

By having no questions, you show that you are not interested in further cooperation with this company. Indeed, if you want to be hired, you have to demonstrate the genuine interest in the work of the company. 

“I Will Have a Steak and a Glass of Red Wine.”

Remember that every detail matters. You may ask the hiring manager if he/she visited this restaurant previously and if he or she can recommend some dish. If not, let your interviewer order first, and order a dish with the equal price or even less. Also, do not even try to drink some alcohol. Even if the interviewer insists, you should control your words and demonstrate your best behavior. 

“Sorry for Being Late.”

Being late for your interview is a terrible mistake, which serves as a proof that you are an irresponsible person. Just be on time, that is all.

“Sorry for Being Too Early.”

Coming one hour or even thirty minutes before the interview, you put the pressure on the hiring manager, which is not good for you. Coming 10-15 minutes before the interview is quite appropriate. 

“I Am Going Through a Difficult Period Right Now.”

Although many people would feel sympathy for the person, who experiences some difficulties, but not your employer. No matter if you are trying to overcome the consequences of divorce or experiencing another family drama, do not try to make it a reason to get a job.
